Jennings Operation Excel is a year-round after-school program. The program is located in the St. Louis County Housing Authority’s Family Investment Center in Jennings. It operates in partnership with the Housing Authority, the City of Jennings, the School District of Jennings, and Area Resources for Community and Human Services (ARCHS). Jennings Operation Excel is designed to provide a safe, structured environment during non-school hours (during the academic year and the summer) for young people who live in the public housing, and in the surrounding Jennings community, and in close proximity to the Family Investment Center.

A diverse mix of academic, cultural and recreational enrichment activities are available to participants and their families throughout the year. Some of these activities include Genius Academy, Computer Village, Spanish, golf, arts and crafts, modern dance, Girl Scouts, a male support group, a counseling group designed to provide emotional support, develop social skills and anger management, culture, organized physical fitness activities, cheerleading, homework assistance, and free play.

Operation Excel Excels in Providing a Safe Place

Fourteen-year-old Brandon loves basketball, thirteen-year-old Andre can’t wait to dance, Donte is a born artist who loves to draw, and six-year-old Kyle can’t wait to be around the other kids. These four young men have been coming to the Operation Excel After School program day after day for three years. Despite their differences, all of them share a desire to come to a safe, familiar place that allows them to develop personal interests and continue to focus on their studies at school.

In 2004, 121 participants received 17,415 hours of service. Eighty-nine youth received tutoring support twice a week. One hundred twenty one youth participated in recreational and enrichment programs ranging from computer classes to arts and crafts and sports programming. 100 percent of youth participants learned and demonstrated two new skills. Seventy percent of youth increased their math skills as measured by pre- and post achievement tests.
