The interviewer will usually discuss the topic of salary at some point during the interview. The question may be asked in many ways:
- “What type of salary are you seeking?”
- “We offer a base salary of $0.00 an hour.”
- “What salary do you think your work is worth?”
Always discuss a salary range.
When an employer states a specific salary, remember that most companies actually have a salary range with regard to the company payroll.
Your response to the “salary question” MUST be prepared and delivered smoothly. It is important that you take time to research the common industry salary range offered for the position you are seeking. In addition, if you are able, research the common salary ranges offered by the company for which you are interviewing. Knowledge of industry salary trends will add confidence and legitimacy to your salary discussion.
Salary is usually discussed near the end of an interview, after the interviewer has determined if your skills and strengths match the needs of the company.
Example Response:
“I am looking for a fair salary based on my experience. What salary range are you currently offering someone with my experience?”
Be prepared for the interviewer to comeback with a request for a specific dollar amount. Having done your homework, state the salary range you have in mind.
Example Response:
“I am looking for a salary in the range of $0.00 to $0.00. However, at this point I would like to continue to discuss the skills and strengths I can bring to your company.”
