ASIST - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

Facts
Every year more people die by suicide than from all of the armed conflicts around the world.  In a year, as many as 6% of the population consider serious thoughts of suicide.

The Program

ASIST is a LivingWorks program that has helped communities become suicide-safer for almost 25 years.  Integrated and coordinated, LivingWorks’ programs help communities develop suicide-safer attitudes and practices.

Program Philosophy

The ASIST model provides practical training for caregivers and clinicians seeking to prevent the immediate risk of suicide.  Focusing on small groups, ASIST uses many different teaching processes to create a practice-oriented and interactive learning experience.

Program Strategy

People considering suicide often share their distress and intent.  The ASIST service model helps participants hear, recognize and respond to these invitations for help.

The ASIST program develops participants’ confidence and capacity to ask about suicide when they recognize pleas for help or are worried about someone’s safety.  The training provides tools to help prevent the immediate risk of suicide.

The emphasis of ASIST training is on “suicide first aid” – helping a person at risk stay safe and seek further assistance as needed.

Outcomes
Evaluations indicate training programs utilizing the ASIST model increase participants’ knowledge and confidence to respond to a person at risk of suicide.  In addition, ASIST skills are retained over time and are used to save lives.
