ROTARY CLUB PROVIDES $5,000 GRANT FOR COMPUTER SOFTWARE
Software Aids in Student Performance Evaluation at Shreve Neighborhood Center

Provident received a $5,000 grant from the Rotary Club of St. Louis to purchase  computer software that will help improve the reading, math and language art skills of young people who use tutoring and academic support programs at its Shreve Neighborhood Center.

The software, actually a computer-based instructional curriculum for students between kindergarten and grade 12, will support an already successful after-school tutoring program at the center for youth from the O’Fallon and Penrose neighborhoods in north St. Louis. Students receive tutoring three times a week at the center, located at 4008 Shreve Avenue.

Staff at the center will use the curriculum to evaluate how well students are doing in reading, math and language arts.  The software will assist teachers in using the right instructional strategies to help students improve their skills, grades and Missouri Assessment Program or MAP test scores.  About 300 students will use the software.

The Rotary Club of St. Louis supports community service projects in the city of St. Louis that provide aid and services to the less fortunate, particularly young people. The club has more than 200 members.

The Shreve Neighborhood Center, established by Provident, has been providing after-school and summer programs for youth for more than a decade.  It offers a safe haven for youth, who can get help with homework, participate in craft projects, receive tutoring, participate in a special teen pregnancy prevention project, go on field trips, interact with positive role models and even get a nutritious snack.

Founded in 1860, Provident is a leader in furthering the well-being and self-sufficiency of individuals, families and communities, serving more than 47,000 persons throughout the St. Louis region annually. Provident provides effective and affordable counseling services for adults and children as well as a suicide prevention hotline. The agency’s customized community-based programs offer prevention and intervention services to schools, as well as workforce preparedness and other innovative services for youth and their families.
