MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY GRANTWILL ENHANCE PROVIDENT'S FIVE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS
The Missouri Department of Public Safety announced a grant award to Provident under the 2009 U.S. Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Title II Formula Grant program. The $34,952 award will support and expand Provident’s five St. Louis locations for after-school programming.
According to the US Department of Education, the rate for juvenile crime peaks in the after-school hours. About 10 percent of violent juvenile crimes are committed between 3 pm and 4 pm. Children are also at a much greater risk of being the victim of a violent crime (murder, a violent sex offense, robbery, or assault) after the school day ends, roughly 2 pm to 6 pm. After-school programs that utilize early intervention strategies help under-served children build successful futures by reducing risk factors for juvenile delinquency and increasing positive life skills.
The Missouri Department of Public Safety grant will enhance Provident’s current after school locations serving high risk areas in and around St. Louis by adding the Lions Quest teacher training curriculum and character development, motivation, and inter-personal skills programming for students.
This year’s grant competition was fierce as DPS, looking to distribute $750,000, received 58 proposals totaling in excess of $2.8 million. Awards were based on the applicant's demonstration of need, proposed operations, implementation strategy, and overall proposal quality.
With over a decade of after school programming experience, Provident’s DPS application demonstrated strong experience and reliability, good data on the success of previous programs and a commitment to providing service to St. Louis children and youth.
Provident believes in the ability of our after-school programs to support youth and build healthy communities. We thank the Missouri Department of Public Safety for their recognition of Provident’s after-school program successes and for supporting these successful programs into the future.
