Provident Behavioral Health Expands Community Outreach: Bridging Faith and Mental Health Support

News, Views

Meet Emma Bacila, Provident’s Behavioral Outreach Specialist who is focused on expanding mental health conversations into new spaces.

Q: What are some of the new ways Provident is reaching out to St. Louis-area communities? What initiated this effort?

A: Provident is connecting with religious leaders and congregants through email campaigns and phone calls plus participating in events and presentations. We’re also working with secular nonprofit organizations. We want people to know about local resources and services, as well as create relationships that address the mental health needs of the St. Louis area.

Q: What are some of the early results from this expanded focus?

A: Our new connections have responded warmly and are curious to learn more about how our services can support their groups. Programs such as TeleHope and the Access Center are of particular interest, as these leaders know there is a need for immediate, low-barrier services. They appreciate that they can refer their people to Provident to receive support at low or no cost.

Q: What do the next few months look like for this program?

A: We are hosting a presentation for older adults at the St. Louis County Public Library, hosting a Mental Wellness in the Faith Community event, and continuing to connect with other religious institutions.

Q: Why is this work important? What are your goals for expanding into new communities?

A: Community outreach is crucial for raising awareness about mental health stigma, suicide prevention, and accessing services. The goal is to act as a catalyst, help reduce stigma, and provide resources for people who need them.
